“I’ve eaten horse meat for years,” said Sappington, who slaughters the animals himself and keeps a meat locker stocked at his home near Roswell, New Mexico.”

BACKGROUND | BLOOMBERG NEWS

Tim Sappington is ready to buy horses for Valley Meat Co., which is seeking to open the first U.S. horse slaughterhouse since 2007. Right now he’s the only paid employee, and he puts his money where his mouth is.

Valley Meat could soon become the nation’s only horse-slaughterer and the first since 2007. It is located about 9 miles outside of Roswell, New Mexico, near dairy farms and a ranch that advertises itself as the home of a Kentucky Derby winner and other prize horses.

Health inspectors conduct a verification of the origin of meat in a supermarket in Besançon, France. While horsemeat itself is consumed in many nations, including China, Mexico, and Russia, its unacknowledged presence in U.K. meat set off an outcry in Europe earlier this year that devastated consumer demand for suddenly-suspect beef. Tim eats horse meat. And he likes it.

“I’ve eaten it for years,” said Sappington, who slaughters the animals himself and keeps a meat locker stocked at his home near Roswell, New Mexico.

Sappington and others see the plan to reopen the shuttered cattle facility about 8 miles outside Roswell, near a ranch that is home to a Kentucky Derby winner, as a chance to reclaim jobs now going to Mexico.

The idea of killing horses for food has generated heated opposition from animal-welfare advocates who say it is cruel and could introduce unhealthy meat into the food supply, and it has spurred legislation in Congress to keep it from happening.

  1. I watched this on FB and wished there was something more I could do than just sign a petition; like have this man arrested for cold blooded murder. The world is changing for the better but there are still bad people that will not grow and change. For those like him we all must work harder to save Equines future.

    • If a person can go to jail for killing a dog at point blank range how come authorities are not over there arresting him right now for that video? I couldn’t watch it as soon as he pulled out the gun I couldn’t watch the rest I just stopped watching it that horse trusted him and that is so sad I don’t know who sold him that horse but I would be sooo pissed off if that was my horse that I put time and effort into training and being that tame I would be so mad.. I am mad he could just do this I could never do that, the animal so was healthy and he just killed it :(( I am crying this makes me so sad how come no one has arrested him yet isn’t it illegal to kill a animal without humanely euthanizing it…he doesn’t even have a right to slaughter horses yet..and he is doing it without permission.

      • Here, in the state of Florida, a person cannot go to jail for shooting a dog at point blank range. They are property here and, at least in Lee County, Florida, Animal Control tells me you can “humanely” euthanize a dog for any reason whatsoever, as long as the killing doesn’t cause the animal prolonged suffereing. This is what’s wrong with the world today!!! And, we have a lot more protective laws here in the US than around the world…I shudder to think of what happens elsewhere. Apparently, the auction tag was still on the horse when he killed it.

  2. The next time you send out a video like this, warn the people you send it to. I barely made it to the bathroom. People, this man is vile. I’ve never seen anyone this cold. He WANTS you to send this out. He feeds off of the pain it causes, the anger and frustration.
I am not going to post this forward. I will not pander to his needs. All of the animals I live with are rescued…horses, donkeys, cats and dogs but I will not send this video to anyone. I am still crying.
My only hope is that one of the horses he leads swings around and double barrels him.
In the meantime, I suggest that you react to this by contacting your congressmen on both the state and national level and let them know your opinions. There is a bill before congress, S.A.F.E Act, that will, if passed, stop all slaughter of horses in the USA as well as making it illegal to transport horses to Mexico or Canada. Please, take the time to call your senators and representatives about that.
DO NOT SEND ANY VIDEOS LIKE THIS WITHOUT A WARNING.

    • If we do not stand up for the horses who will! Some times we need to see what is going on behind our backs so, we can make a stand! It made me cry and made me mad as hell! It made me
take a stand on people that do stuff like this.

    • I agree with you. This man enjoys inflicting death on an innocent creature that can’t fight back. It made me extremely sad that such a beautiful animal completely trusted him then wham! I live in New Mexico and I’m infuriated by the actions of this demented man.

Last night we showed the shocking video of Tim Sappington shooting a horse to make a point against all animal activists who might get in his way. He stated “All you animal activists, f$#% you” and then shot the horse at point blank range. This could be considered a hate crime against all of us who have spoken out against the Roswell NM horse slaughter house. The owner of the slaughter house intends to hire 40-100 people, and Tim is the first employee of Valley Meat Co.

We must all band together and put a stop to this. What Tim did may very well be the catalyst to ending the possibility of the horse slaughter house in Roswell, but we must join together to make that happen.

Here is the link to the unedited video, warning, it is graphic: http://tinyurl.com/d8ghye2 Send this link to law enforcement and any news outlets you can think of.

Another action is getting horse slaughter outlawed nation wide. Support the following bill that will end horse slaughter and export once and for all.

Please make a brief, polite phone call to your U.S. Representative and two U.S. Senators to urge co-sponsorship of H.R. 1094 S. 541, the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act that ends the cruel slaughter of America’s horses as well as their export for slaughter abroad.

You can find your representative at this link:
    http://action.humanesociety.org/site/PageServer?pagename=electedOfficials_federal.

You can say: “I would like you to please co-sponsor and support H.R. 1094/S. 541, the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act to protect our nation’s horses and keep the food supply safe for consumers.”

We know we are asking a lot of you, but this is extremely important. We must be a united voice for those that have no voice.

Please share and like this post as much as possible to spread the word.

    • I would gladly volunteer if it didn’t mean spending the rest of my life in jail! I hope someone takes care of him as Karma usually takes far too long. He doesn’t deserve to breath the same air as the peaceful souls he kills!

    • Amen, amen. Karma needs to come swiftly, in the form of a swift horse’s kick to his head causing permanent brain damage (wait…he already has that, obviously!!!)

  4. This man is a poor excuse of a human being. Where we be without the horse. They were our transportation, our war horses, pets, show horses, they plowed the fields and they have done more for humans than any other animal Horses are NOT food animals, The only animal here is Tim Sappington and doesn’t that name fit? He is a sap! I hope he gets what he deserves!

      • Not on the email there’s not:

Click on this LINK for Tim’s Message to all Horse Lovers, and Animal Rights Activists.

      • Yes if I had clicked on the FIRST link on the email which takes me to this page … however, the link at the bottom of the email has no warning which is the one that I unfortunately clicked on..

  5. I would love to know where this douche bag lives. I will have this video implanted in my mind forever. Poor little thing.

  6. A message to tim sappington. There is a special place in HELL for low lives like yourself you COWARD. Calling out ALL animal rights activists probably was not a smart move either. New Mexico might be weak in animal rights but California is not that far AND we actually have some in Mexico who I pray cross the border to visit you

  7. I also sent this to Janie at CNN (jane velez-mitchell). She is a great warrior for animals, and she DOES read these emails.

  8. If shooting a dog is illegal this shit should be illegal too! I didn’t watch the video because I read what everyone else wrote about it and as an animal lover and rescuer I can’t watch it. I will say one this if I could find this sick son of a bitch I would take my shotgun and shoot this bastard at point blank range and torture his ass till he begged for death then torture him some more!! Then for every animal he killed Id let one piss and shit all over him just to degrade his bitch ass!!!

  9. Tim Sappington is NOT the “only paid employee at Valley Meats”. He WAS a contractor for Valley Meats, but has recently been fired. The owner of Valley Meats is Rick De Los Santos and he has been working on getting the final inspection done to get his plant approved for horse slaughter.

The video that you posted of Tim Sappington was posted by him over a year ago and has just finally re-surfaced due to the Valley Meats push for Horse Slaughter here in New Mexico.

Please research your facts before posting false information!

  10. If there is justice this sub-human garbage monster WILL get what’s coming=Just hope it’s VERY SOON!!!~ We must do everything we can to stop this all from happening. Horses deserve the best-my “GOD” I cannot believe what’s happening!!~

  11. I’ve heard about the negative comments I haven’t gotten to read them till today I don’t know how you can truly judge someone without meeting them. I would like to share a couple of things about this man. Then you can try to past judgment without meeting him. I first met Tim over 20 years ago, my father horseshoed his horses. They were never what you call close friends but acquiesce. Over 2 years ago my brother took his life. The morning came and Tim was at my father’s home wanting to know if we needed any help or anything he could do. After my brother’s death, my father took it very hard and alcohol took control of his life. My father got to the point of not wanting to go on with life anymore. Tim showed up to the hospital and brought my father to his home, fixed a bedroom up and let him know that there are people that care for him very much. My father still drinks but he hasn’t talked about not going on with life anymore. I lost my brother and the only reason why I haven’t lost my father is because of what Tim done. I turned to drugs and lost everything. Three months ago I found myself homeless and nowhere to go. At 230 in the morning I called Tim and asked him for help. He opened his home to me and fixed the very same bedroom he did for my father for me. The only thing he ever asks of me is to stay clean, be positive and occasionally if I could turn down the radio in my room. I feel very blessed because I couldn’t tell you or even put in words where I would be right now if it wasn’t for him. Last month he was working in the shop on a project he needs to get done. One of the neighbors came down and asked him if he could help load a trailer. He stopped doing what he was working on and spent the rest of the day loading a trailer. If you very find yourself broke down on the side of the road and watch people drive right on by be assure he isn’t one of them. He’s the one that stops to help. I am so ashamed of the people writing these comments. The time you drive by make threats, sit at the computer to make threats. The world would be a better place if you could be more like him and take the time to help a family member, a friend, neighbor, or even a stranger. He is by no means perfect but he’s not the bad guy people have made him out to be, He doesn’t know I’m posting this and is probably going to be upset at me but I thought everybody should know what kind of man you are judging. The people posting positive comments I truly thank you very much and I hope you keep it up because he needs your support more then he knows. Thank you for taking the time to stop and read this post because now you know some things about this man, Tim. Laura Haley

  12. Too bad the POS showed his true colors by the actions on his video! Whatever “good” he might have done for a few humans was completely obliterated by his utterly EVIL, no -conscience, no soul act of cowardice. May he rot in hell!

  13. When I got this I opened it up and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It almost made me cry.
The video was so cruel that I wasn’t to Kill the person in the video. I hope this guy go’s straight when he dies. A person like this needs to have the same thing that he did to the Horse should happen to him and then send him straight to HELL. Everyone who see’s this better have a strong Heart. This was one of Gods Animals and this Creep will pay for Killing the Horse.
    Larry “Indian Boy” Grazier

  14. That’s more than sardistic, coldhearted and bestialic what this man have done.In the first moment he caress the horse, and in another second he shoot the horse in the head.
Yes this horse and all other animals go to heaven,it doesn’t matter how they lived. But who comes not in heaven are such brain dead and coldhearted peoples like that man who shoot the horse without blinking with an eye.His soul is more than dark.

  15. Sappington says he butchered the poor baby horse for meat. Tell me how he accomplished this? The horse is laying in the dirt. Shooting a horse in the head releases all kinds of stress hormones. Doesn’t that make the meat unsafe for human consumption? Make him produce the meat. If he can’t arrest him. This man should not own guns or animals. He should be in prision with the other lunatics who are a danger to our civilized society!

  16. Explain to me how a horse is property? Then why can anyone rescue animals who are abused and mistreated? I’ve seen lots of examples of horses being rescued from abuse & starvation. what century does NM live in? This is so wrong

  17. Can I assume all the comments above are written by vegetarians who think all animal slaughter is abhorent or is it just horses that get special treatment?

I hate to break it to you but horses are no different to sheep, cows, pigs, rabbits, deer etc. Horse meat tastes good so why shouldn’t they be used as a food source?

Admittedly that wasn’t the best way of killing the horse but it was quick and involved minimal stress on the animal.
